ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
  Communication Program
The CHCLA Communication Program is designed to enhance communication skills of our students within the school facility and in the community. All of our students participate in this program and are taught alternative communication techniques using research based educational tools such as Handwriting Without Tears, Language for Learning, and the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). Other skills that are taught in this program are name recognition, vocabulary building, beginning reading skills, and sentence formation.

The Listening Program

The Listening Program (TLP) was adapted from Advanced Brain Technologies, a company specializing in products designed to maximize human potential. TLP is designed to promote speech and language development, vocal usage and rhythmic understanding, build attention span, enhance memory and concentration abilities, and further develop communication skills. Students attending TLP group sessions experience social interaction and are given opportunities to build social skills.

Expressive and Receptive Language Program

This program assists students in building their individual expressive and receptive language skills. Students are taught to carry out multi-step directions, sort objects into categories, recognize objects in story books and picture cards, make choices and communicate choices, as well as cause and effect. This program uses the Reading Mastery system, a system designed to promote reading, vocabulary building, and enunciation. Community safety skills are also reinforced in this program.

Pre-Academic Math Program

All students at CHCLA participate in the Pre-Academic Math Program to develop skills that they utilize in the community. Students learn the basics of sorting, counting, and number recognition. Students are also taught the value of money and are given opportunities to use their money skills in public during our weekly Community Based Instruction (CBI) outings.

Physical Education and Domestic Skills Program

As CHC continues to consult with various therapists from a variety of consulting agencies, the P.E. and Domestic Program focuses on the development of fine motor and gross motor skills while implementing self help and independent living skills. Students are taught basic self-help skills such as dish washing, laundry routines, light cleaning and hygiene. They are also involved with sports such as basketball, dancing, water sports, ball toss, body stretching, and walking to enhance their gross motor skills. It is also in this program where our students develop group activity skills while working on arts and crafts projects, or taking part in our sensory integration curriculum.

Work Ability Program

As our students grow into young adults, our work ability program offers them a chance at becoming productive citizens in the community. Students are trained with job skill, and work ethic both on campus and at our work training sights. Students taking part in this program are encouraged to become task oriented and avid problem solvers. They acquire skills that they are able to showcase at our sponsor sights. With continued training, our students are building their independence skills at Round Table Pizza of Greenhaven and at PRIDE Industries.

Community Based Instruction

At CHCLA we believe that many lessons cannot be taught, but can be learned through experiences while in the community. The students and staff of CHCLA participate in weekly field trips. Whether it is a walk in one of the local parks, or train rides through historical landmarks, the students of CHCLA are exposed to many community resources. Some of our more recent field trips included a visit to Safety Ville, where students learned street safety, and to a local fire station. While in the community, students are also given the opportunity to identify street signs and community helpers.

Therapy and Other Services

Partnered with the several school districts throughout the greater Sacramento region, we have the privilege and honor to offer additional services to our students.  These services include horse and animal therapy, transitional living planning, adaptive P.E., behavioral services, as well as occupational therapy and , speech and language therapy.  However, the students' favorite therapy is clearly the deep tissue compressions and sensory integration.
